“Do we have the courage to face the realities of our time?”
So asks filmaker Chris Jordan in the trailer to his exquisitely filmed documentary, Midway: Message from the Gyre. It’s not a film about gardening, but rather, the plight of the Laysan Albatross. The four minute snippet on Jordan’s website is so starkly tragic, it had me bubbling like a baby and vowing to change the way I live. Please have a look.

Horrific. Thank you for sharing. It’s deepened my resolve to avoid plastics. Just yesterday I was reading Beth Terry’s blog, My Plastic-free Life – she has some great ideas.
Also, congrats with your latest Organic Gardening Magazine article – a great read. It must be exciting to be published just a few pages behind the guru Cundall.
Thanks Candice – I haven’t heard of My Plastic Free Life so I’ll check it out. Being published in the same mag as Peter is real privilege, and just a bit daunting at the same time! He’s one of my gardening heroes and an incredibly knowledgable man. If I can be going as strong as he is at 85, I’ll be doing very well.
Justin. This is so confronting and necessarily so.
The sad thing is, we will eventually destroy this beautiful world of ours. I’m not sure how long it will take, but we will destroy it. Sorry to be so harsh and pessimistic, but I am a realist. We are talking about human beings, after all.
That being said, I’m with you. I will, and presently am, changing the way I live. My neighbours and some ‘friends’ don’t like it, but I’m on track to being THAT weirdo alternative many city others are so terrified to associate with. I’m gradually not giving a damn. I only hope that it somehow helps keep this world turning.
By the way, and as usual, awesome writing. Your blog is always a pleasure.

Thanks Deborah. I’m slightly more optimistic, but it feels like an uphill battle much of the time. Have you read Paul Kingsnorth’s article “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist”? I think you’d like it.
Thanks for the reading recommendation, Justin. Will definitely look it up and devote time to it.
Thought you might be interested to read about the work of the Boomerang Alliance (http://www.boomerangalliance.org.au), a number of environmental groups united in working towards zero waste in Australia. In particular, I thought you’d be keen to know about their current “Cash for Containers” campaign. Kicking myself that I didn’t write to you sooner as Environment Ministers meet tomorrow to make a decision on how to stop 8 billion beverage containers being landfilled or littered every year.
You can take action yourself by forwarding a generic E-Letter to our state Environment Minister supporting the introduction of a 10cent RecycleRefund scheme. It’s easy as, just follow this link

Cheers, Deborah.
Thanks for the info Deborah. I’ll check it out.
Early morning when I found your blog. Skimmed down and watched this video clip. I wasn’t prepared for what I saw. What a way to start the day!
